The score is a decision aid, not a guarantee or probability. It combines projected funding, ending reserves, shortfall timing, debt, emergency reserves, plan completeness and resilience under lower returns and higher inflation.

Harbour North tests changes on cloned copies of your plan. Recommendation Explorer can save a separate scenario, but it never changes the active plan automatically.

      Retirement Benefits

Enter CPP, OAS, and workplace pensions as monthly amounts. Harbour North now validates government-benefit ranges and repairs accidental repeated monthly-to-annual conversions.

      Plan completeness

Missing retirement income can make projections and optimizer recommendations misleading.

      Checking plan

      How benefit amounts are handled

      • Enter CPP as the estimated monthly amount payable at age 65. Harbour North stores the annual equivalent internally and adjusts it when the optimizer tests ages 60 or 70.
      • Enter OAS as the estimated monthly amount payable at age 65. Harbour North stores the annual equivalent internally and applies the OAS deferral adjustment when testing age 70.
      • Enter workplace pensions as monthly amounts. Harbour North stores the annual equivalent internally and treats it as taxable recurring income from its selected start age through its end age.
      • All records remain visible and editable in the Financial Ledger.

      Financial ledger

Record the complete household picture: emergency reserves, investments, property, vehicles, other assets, income, debt and spending.

      Emergency fund

Enter the amount specifically reserved for unexpected expenses. It is included in investable assets, net worth and retirement projections.

Do not also include this same money in a separate Cash account, or it will be counted twice.

      Net-worth assets

Add your home, land, vehicles, recreational property, business interests and other major assets.

Assets appear in the complete account and asset list below and are included in total net worth.

      Complete household balance sheet

Examples: RRSP, TFSA, chequing, primary residence, Nova Scotia land, vehicles and other property.

      Current and future income

Salary, WCB, pension, CPP, OAS, rental, business, or other recurring income.

      Debt accounts

Keep each mortgage, line of credit, card, or loan separate.

      Annual or monthly spending

Essential living, lifestyle, travel, healthcare, or other needs.

      Future goals and changes

Purchases, inheritances, property sales, gifts, renovations, or other one-time events.

      Assumption Centre

Set the planning assumptions used by projections and optimization in one place. Changes are saved automatically.

      Economic assumptions

Used for spending and tax bracket indexing.
Used for indexed pensions, CPP, OAS, and other income.
Used as the default for scenario testing.

      Planning targets

Optimizer will favour plans that preserve at least this amount.

      Optimizer search range

Off by default so the optimizer cannot solve the plan simply by making your partner work longer.
CPP and OAS amounts are adjusted when their start ages change. The optimizer does not change your saved plan until you choose Apply recommendation.
      Financial engine validation

      Retirement Optimizer

Choose what matters most. Harbour North ranks financially viable plans according to your goal instead of simply maximizing wealth.

      Ready to analyze

      1. Choose your primary goal

      2. Target and hard limits

Defaults to the age saved in Household.
Hard requirement: Spending must remain funded through the planning horizon. Unfunded plans rank below every funded plan.

Partner retirement remains locked to the saved plan unless partner optimization is explicitly enabled in Assumptions.

      3. What Harbour North tests

      • Primary retirement ages within the Assumptions search range. A target age outside that range is added automatically.
      • CPP start ages of 60, 65, and 70 with benefit adjustments.
      • OAS start ages of 65 and 70 with deferral adjustments.
      • Partner retirement age only when deliberately unlocked.

      4. How plans are ranked

For target-date and earliest-retirement goals, ending wealth is only a tie-breaker.

      How tax-bracket optimization works

The model targets the indexed ceiling of the first federal tax bracket for each retired account owner. Available RRSP or RRIF funds may be drawn during low-income years, taxes are recalculated, required spending is funded, and after-tax excess is retained in cash. The model does not currently optimize individual capital-gain lots, pension-income splitting or explicitly calculate OAS recovery tax.
